Chapter 18: Bern Village

Davu and Elaina flew over chimney smoke gently curling into the morning sunlight. Citizens of Bern Village lazily walked through the street, laden with bundles or buckets. The house Louie and Yadira landed on looked like there was an explosion in the living room. It was in the middle of well-maintained homes with mossy walkways and tall trees lining a dirt street. A gaping hole in the roof allowed in pattering rain. Davu landed on Master Lang’s damp training field where Louie was helping the level four and five trainees. Elaina marched to him and tucked her fists on her waist, “Louie, what were you and Yadira thinking?”

“We didn’t mean to break the roof.”

“You told me you wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

“You can fix the injuries.”

“Come, show me the injuries.”

Master Lang nodded when Elaina pulled Louie away. She ruffled through her jacket for the stack of letters buried in a deep pocket. Elaina handed Master Lang his letter from Khalom then walked with Louie to his house.

When Elaina and Louie arrived, she paused outside the house that Master Crevan used to live in. Through the living room window, a stranger gazed at her. It was heartbreaking to see the house transformed, even before she stepped inside. Elaina caught a sob in her throat.

Louie opened the door, “Mom and Theron were married a couple of weeks ago. I thought I would scare my new siblings . . . We definitely scared them!”

“Louie!”

“We didn’t mean to hurt anyone. Mom told me I could have this house, but after I destroyed Theron’s, I thought Mom might want it back until they have a chance to fix the roof.”

“Until you fix the roof.”

Louie winced. “Yeah. That’s probably appropriate. I guess Khalom isn’t around to split the cost with me.”

Elaina’s shoulder sagged as she began to realize what Louie was experiencing. He lost his grandfather, his mother got married, and his best friend was away, escorting telepaths. She was preoccupied with her own tasks and didn’t consider what Louie was going through.

A young child was resting on a short sofa with her legs propped up. Louie waved at her. “This is Laila. She was in the house when . . . Well, I guess they were all in the house, but she was right under the hole. At least no one was upstairs.”

Elaina scoffed. “You damaged the roof and the second floor?”

“Yadira sort of . . . lost control. Doctor Noland left a note for you.” Louie handed Elaina a small piece of paper.

Laila has a broken collar bone and needs to be checked for internal bleeding. Wes has bruising in his hand. See if anything is broken.

Elaina pursed her lips. “I thought you said none of the injuries were serious.”

“You can heal them.”

“The fact that I can heal them doesn’t make their injuries less severe.” Elaina shook her head, speechless. She knew Louie was struggling, but a broken collarbone sounded serious to her. Ranvir gave her a suggestion that seemed to make sense. “You and Yadira are going to leave immediately to assist with the telepath escort.
